Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention
There is no safe blood lead level that has been identified for children. Even low levels of lead in the blood can have lifelong health impacts.
The Lead Poisoning Prevention Program at the Midland County Department of Public Health provides:
- Education on lead exposure prevention
- Lead screening
- Referrals for elevated blood lead levels
- Follow-up education to reduce lead levels in children and prevent further exposure.
Home visits by a Public Health Nurse will be offered to families with a child, or multiple children, experiencing elevated blood lead levels.
Blood Lead Testing Recommendations:
Blood lead testing is recommended for children between one and two years of age.
- This age group is most vulnerable to lead poisoning due to the child's developmental stage (crawling and putting items in their mouth).
In addition, it is recommended that all children between the ages of three and six, that have not been previously tested for blood lead, be tested.
