Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention
There is no safe blood lead level that has been identified for children. Even low levels of lead in the blood can have lifelong health impacts.
The Lead Poisoning Prevention Program at the Midland County Department of Public Health provides:
- Education on lead exposure prevention
- Lead screening
- Referrals for elevated blood lead levels
- Follow-up education to reduce lead levels in children and prevent further exposure.
Home visits by a Public Health Nurse will be offered to families with a child, or multiple children, experiencing elevated blood lead levels.
Blood Lead Testing:
Michigan law (MCL 333.5457d) states that children must be tested at 12 months of age (1 year old) and 24 months of age (2 years old), or by 72 months of age (6 years old) if there is no record of a previous test.
This age group is most vulnerable to lead poisoning due to the child's developmental stage (crawling and putting items in their mouth).
The Midland County Department of Public Health offers blood lead screening!
