Conservatorship


  1. Handle/prepare finances – record all income and disburse money for ward’s needs, receive all bills, pay rent/living expenses, and ensure ward has spending money for incidental needs.
  2. Develop and update ward’s monthly budget as needed.
  3. Conduct research on background of ward, including sources of income, expenses, assets, real estate, life insurance, etc.
  4. Apply for and maintain benefits from various agencies, such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, housing, food stamps, independent insurance companies, Veteran’s Administration, and other social/community support programs.
  5. Manage ward’s estate responsibly. Chose conservative investments if ward has a large estate.
  6. Conserve money for emergencies that may arise.
  7. Plan for and purchase pre-paid funeral insurance.
  8. Protect ward’s estate including real and personal property. Make arrangements to store or sell property if necessary.
  9. Appear at any legal proceedings that affect the ward.
  10. Make telephone calls, copies and mailings that affect the estate.
  11. Work with other agencies for ward’s care such as Community Mental Health, the ARC, volunteer agencies, nursing homes, etc.
  12. Maintain separate records of all financial information for ward.
  13. Prepare and file federal, state, and local income tax returns.
  14. Prepare and file all reports required by the court.
  15. Provide additional services as needed.
