Hazard Mitigation Plan

What is the Hazard Mitigation Plan?

Hazard mitigation planning reduces loss of life and property by minimizing the impact of disasters. It begins with state, tribal, and local governments identifying natural disaster risks and common vulnerabilities in their area. After identifying these risks, long-term strategies are developed for protecting people and property from similar events. Mitigation plans are crucial to breaking the cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction. The Hazard Mitigation Plan also facilitates the local jurisdiction's ability to apply for FEMA Hazard Mitigation grants to implement planning and construction in mitigation activities.

How often is the plan reviewed or changed?

The plan is reviewed, updated, and evaluated every five years to see the effectiveness of Mitigation Goals and Objectives; and to assess any emerging risks. The current Plan will expire in Feb 2031.

The Midland County Emergency Management Office holds annual Hazard Mitigation Plan Committee meetings annually to review and make sure the plan is current. All local Jurisdictions are invited to participate in the update process to meet their local plan adoption requirements.
