Hazard Mitigation Plan
What is the Hazard Mitigation Plan?
Hazard mitigation planning reduces loss of life and property by minimizing the impact of disasters. It begins with state, tribal, and local governments identifying natural disaster risks and common vulnerabilities in their area. After identifying these risks, long-term strategies are developed for protecting people and property from similar events. Mitigation plans are crucial to breaking the cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction. The Hazard Mitigation Plan also facilitates the local jurisdiction's ability to apply for FEMA Hazard Mitigation grants to implement planning and construction in mitigation activities.
The current plan was last reviewed in 2018 and adopted in early 2019. The adopted plan can be found here
In early 2023, a High Hazard Potential Dam Annex was adopted added to the plan (click here). The adoption of the Annex can be found here
How often is the plan reviewed or changed?
The plan is reviewed, updated, and evaluated every five years to see the effectiveness of Mitigation Goals and Objectives; and to assess any emerging risks. The current Plan will expire in Jan 2024
The Midland County Emergency Management Office is currently reviewing and updating the plan. All local Jurisdictions have been invited to participate in the update process to meet their local plan adoption requirements. Monthly meetings were held between June and October of 2023.
