Due to the tremendous importance of jury service, Michigan law provides certain protections to employees who are summoned to serve on a jury.

An employer who threatens to discipline or discharge an employee because that employee is summoned for jury duty, serves on a jury, or has served on a jury, could be guilty of a misdemeanor and may also be punished for contempt of court.

Additionally, if an employer requires an employee to work additional hours as a result of jury duty such that the total of time worked and time spent serving jury duty exceeds the number of hours customarily worked by the employee during the day, the employer could be guilty of a misdemeanor or punished for contempt of court.
