Detention
The Midland County Juvenile Justice Center's Detention unit is a 22 bed maximum security detention facility. The detention unit is licensed to house juvenile offenders 11-18 years of age. Placement in this facility requires action by the Juvenile Court. Services offered by the facility are listed below.
College Educated & Professionally Trained Staff
All personnel are degreed positions and undergo an extensive 40-hour orientation and training program. Juvenile Specialists receive a minimum of 24 hours of training relevant to their position annually. They are also certified in adult CPR & First Aid, and Non-violent Crisis Intervention through the Crisis Prevention Institute.
School Programs
All youth housed at the Center are provided with quality educational services. Programming is operated by Midland Public Schools and all facility teachers are State certified & hold special education certification. Recreation
Youth receive a minimum of one hour of physical recreation per day during the week and two hours on weekends. Both indoor and outdoor facilities are available to introduce youth to a wide variety of activities through skill building and teamwork.
Complete Medical Services
All youth receive an intake physical by a registered nurse within 72 hours of admission. Detainees have access to a nurse or doctor for medical needs or concerns. In the event of a medical emergency, the youth would be transported to MyMichigan Regional Medical Center in Midland for care. Staff work closely with parents and Probation Officers to ensure that all youth are provided their medically prescribed medications.
Psychological Services
An initial Coherency Assessment, a Suicide Risk Inventory, and a Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) is completed to evaluate each youth’s emotional condition upon admission. Therapy and Psychology professionals are available if needed during their detainment.
Drug Testing
Upon Court Order, fee based drug testing can be administered for the detection of THC, Amphetamines, Methamphetamines, Cocaine, and PCP.
Youth Behavioral Assessment
Juvenile Justice Center supervisors assess each youth and prepare a written report on behavior 48 hours after intake and again seven days after the initial report. Thereafter, assessment summaries are completed every 30 days until discharge.
Food Services
The Juvenile Justice Center participates in the USDA National School Lunch Program. The program includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and two snacks. This insures that all nutritional standards for adolescent youth are met.
Religious Services
All detention youth are offered the opportunity to attend a weekly group fellowship service. This service offered is on a voluntary basis; youth are not required to participate.
